Burning firewood that keeps your flue cleaner

Choosing the right firewood can help minimize creosote buildup in your chimney.

Choosing the Right Wood

Selecting the right type of firewood is critical for maintaining a clean flue. Hardwoods like oak, maple, and birch burn hotter and longer, resulting in less creosote buildup compared to softwoods. Hardwoods also produce less smoke, which contributes to a cleaner chimney.

Ensure your wood is seasoned properly before burning. Seasoned wood has been dried for at least six months and has a moisture content of less than 20%. This allows it to burn more efficiently, reducing the risk of creosote formation.

Storing Firewood Correctly

Proper storage of your firewood is essential for keeping it dry and ready to burn. Stack wood off the ground to prevent moisture absorption, and cover the top with a tarp while leaving the sides open for air circulation.

Avoid placing firewood directly against your house, as this can lead to pest infestations. Instead, store it at least 20 feet away from your home, ensuring a safe and dry storage area.

Burning Habits for a Cleaner Chimney

To keep your flue cleaner, make sure your fires are hot enough to consume the fuel completely. Avoid burning green or wet wood, as this can produce excess smoke and lead to significant creosote buildup.

Also, refrain from burning materials like paper, cardboard, or trash. These can create large amounts of ash and soot, increasing the amount of residue that can build up in your chimney.
